They are Roosters, and those are their houses. Paul says that the roosters'are probably tied to the barrel to keep them seperate, so they do not fight.
You're right. They are roosters - or more commonly known as game-cocks. I've found a few of these in my travels and they're always interesting. It's not illegal to raise fighting cocks, but it is illegal (in KY) to fight them.
